The initiative brings mobile laundromat facilities to areas struck by a natural disaster to provide free cleaning services to survivors. Created after Hurricane Katrina, Tide’s “Loads of Hope” has since cleaned more than 30,000 loads of laundry in disaster sites around the U.S., most recently in flooded Tennessee and Kentucky. The program is funded in part by the sales of vintage t-shirts and a percentage of Tide sales. The Maharishi University of Management is completing its Sustainable Living Center building, currently under construction, by using renewable power, a solar-powered generating system. When finished, the Center will be completely off the grid, housing classrooms, recycling centers, a greenhouse, and workshops for students to study the building itself, which is designed to teach sustainability as well as provide space to study energy uses. Located in Fairfield, Iowa, the school promotes living in harmony with nature, and offers a Sustainable Living Degree program. Cargill sources palm oil from suppliers in Indonesia. The assessment will measure the progress of those suppliers in meeting the criteria established by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil. The WWF will supervise the overall process of evaluation, including field work and in-person visits to plantations, to identify progress on key areas such as land permitting and environmental and social practices. A report on the findings will be released early next year. The Hang Seng Indexes, which measure Hong Kong and China markets, will launch the Hang Seng Corporate Sustainability Index on July 26th. The Index will provide benchmarks for investors to track sustainable development of locally listed businesses. The Index includes 30 Hong Kong-listed corporate leaders, among them eight finance picks and seven from the property sector. The Prix Special was awarded to Chung Too for his commitment to children affected by AIDS in Central China. His Chi Heng Foundation has helped 12,000 children in 200 villages. BNP Paribas Wealth Management is one of the first private banks to offer a philanthropic service for its clients. A new survey of CEOs by the United Nations Global Compact and Accenture has found that 93 percent see sustainability as crucial to their future success. The report, “A New Era of Sustainability,” surveyed more than 750 chief executives from almost 100 countries. Of these, 72 percent said that strengthening their brand, trust, and reputation with consumers was the primary drive behind sustainability initiatives. 81 percent said their companies have fully embedded sustainability issues in the strategy and operations of their companies. Environmental groups have been critical of open net-pen salmon farms, which release pollution, chemicals, and parasites into the surrounding ocean. In a related development, Safeway has announced a partnership with marine conservation group FishWise to develop and implement a comprehensive sustainable seafood policy. Safeway will also implement a traceability system to screen out suppliers who do not conform to its new policies, and will discontinue sales of species at risk from overfishing. The Palestine Investment Fund and Abraaj Capital have announced a $50 million dollar private equity fund, the first of its kind dedicated to the Palestinian economy. The fund will focus on investing in small- and medium-sized Palestinian enterprises—SMEs—across a range of sectors and stages of maturity. SMEs account for more than 95 percent of enterprises in Palestine, 84 percent of private-sector employment, and 55 percent of gross domestic product. The PIF is a publicly owned investment fund which aims to develop the Palestinian economy through strategic investments.
