The CWAA, a nonprofit launched in 2008, focuses on water sustainability and improving public awareness of issues concerning water. Veolia Water is a provider of comprehensive water and wastewater services and technological solutions to municipal and industrial customers, and is the top global publisher of research works on water issues. Ernst & Young has released its 2010 Business Risk Report which includes Corporate Social Responsibility as #9 on its Top Ten Risk List. According to the advisory and accounting company, businesses must take more notice of public opinion and improve transparency and communications efforts, particularly on the subject of environmental impacts. Industries most at risk in the CSR category include asset management; banking; mining and minerals; and power and utilities. Metro has a pilot project with SKS Microfinance, and the Future Group has just signed a similar deal. Bharti-Wal-Mart, an equal joint venture, has teamed with Kotak Mahindra Bank for cards to offer ready credit to the kiranas. The MFIs will provide credit, and also serve as intermediaries to collect orders from the kiranas, source merchandise for them from the big retailers, and manage deliveries. The MFIs will not charge interest on the credit, but instead will receive a commission from the large retailers. Smithfield Foods has released its ninth annual CSR Report, highlighting the company’s progress in environmental performance, animal welfare, food safety, community relations, and employee citizenship. A global producer of pork and turkey products, Smithfield includes in its report a retrospective narrative that acknowledges the company’s history prior to adoption of corporate social responsibility programs, practices that were criticized by animal welfare and employee activists. The report outlines how CSR is now embedded in every area of the company’s operations, and concludes that managing CSR is integral to producing good business results. A provider of pipe, precast forms, brick, and roof tiles to the construction industry, Hanson’s mission is to reduce raw material consumption through recycling and reuse. In one program, the company’s “Brick Back” initiative accepts clean brick waste from construction sites delivered to its facilities to be converted into ground, recyclable material for addition to Hanson Brick’s existing products. A new network to help low-income young people in the Washington D.C. area will be funded by $13 million from nonprofits, private philanthropists, and the federal government. Venture Philanthropy Partners was one of 11 organizations nationally chosen by the new Social Innovation Fund, an effort administered by the federal Corporation for National and Community Service, to combine public and private funds to address challenging problems. The Web site contains the Report and other information about Cummins’ environmental initiatives. The green programs and partnerships launched by Cummins in the previous year include meeting the EPA emissions regulations for its on-highway diesel engine in the U.S. Salesforce, the cloud computing company, has been awarded two “Stevie” Awards in the 8th Annual American Business Awards. Salesforce won for “Most Innovative Company of the Year” and its Salesforce.com Foundation won for CSR Program of the Year. Salesforce was recognized for redefining the enterprise software industry, and the foundation was honored for integrating a philanthropy model into its business practice. To date, salesforce.com employees have contributed more than 192,000 hours of volunteer service; more than 8,500 nonprofits run their operations with donated salesforce.com product; and more than $20 million dollars in grants has been awarded to nonprofits. It’s chock full of information about our environmental programs, philanthropy, products and services, and economic performance. Much of the information that appears here can’t be found anywhere else. My view is that credible annual sustainability reports are essential for companies that want to be seen as leaders in corporate responsibility. That thought is echoed in the video by Bob Stoffel, the senior vice president who oversees sustainability at UPS. Reflective of our engineering culture, we report not only anecdotal information but also quantifiable achievements, operational and management data, goals and key performance indicators. We do all this work to meet the growing expectations of stakeholders who expect companies to measure and report their impact. Hundreds of groups, researchers, investors and NGOs contact us annually and each of them is looking for data relevant to his or her interests. We write this report based on that stakeholder feedback. But the informational needs of those stakeholders vary significantly. For some stakeholders, the shorter the better. They want to find specific details quickly. For others, they want technical data that helps them analyze our actions through their prism. This report was designed to be usable for both types of stakeholders. The first 24 pages present a quick summary of our sustainability story. The back section, distinctive with its shaded background, is designed to satisfy readers who need in depth information around technical issues, data and the “how” of our programs. If you like charts and graphs, footnotes and statistics, this is the section for you! Both sections reflect the reporting standards of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), which is the recommended international format for sustainability reports. And for the first time, the contents were reviewed by Deloitte & Touche LLP and GRI, which we believe gives us important credentials and accountability for the content in this report. Our sustainability report represents the collective actions of thousands of UPSers who consistently operate our business in a transparent and responsible manner. While we believe in the importance of this report, it’s more important that our actions speak at least as loud as our words. We welcome feedback on the report and aim to make it better every year.
